Overview

KiliFortune Expeditions offers treks to the summits of both Mt Kilimanjaro and Mt Meru. Mt Meru is often used as an acclimatization trek before attempting Mt Kilimanjaro, but it is a wonderful and beautiful trek in its own right. Mt Meru information is given here.

Climbing Kilimanjaro

At 5,895 meters (19,341 feet) Mount Kilimanjaro is the highest mountain in Africa, thus one of the famous Seven Summits. It is also the tallest freestanding mountain in the world and the highest mountain in the world that can be climbed without technical gear and techniques. The snow-capped peak of Africa is a dormant volcano - actually 3 dormant volcanoes merged together. It is located inside of Kilimanjaro National Park in northern Tanzania.

Who Can Climb Kilimanjaro? Anyone from children over the age of 10 to older generations in their 70s and 80s! All you need is determination and the will to get to the summit. The real challenge with climbing Kilimanjaro is the altitude and the rate of ascent. Don’t worry we will be with you every step of the way! Our guides are highly skilled professionals and are a key component to your success.

Mt Meru Treks

Mt Meru is the second highest mountain in Tanzania, fifth highest in Africa reaches and elevation of 4,566m (14,980 ft). If you research the mountain on the internet you might get confused because there is a Meru Peak in India, part of the Himalayan mountain range. What we offer is Mt Meru in Arusha National Park, 70km west of Mt Kilimanjaro in northern Tanzania.

Like Kilimanjaro, Mt Meru is a dormant volcano with its last activity recorded in 1910. Also like Kilimanjaro, it is a trek rather than a climb (meaning no technical equipment or skills are needed). There is only one route on Mt Meru. Overnight accommodations are in huts with solar lighting. The trek is typcially done in four days although a three days itinerary is possible if you are in good fitness.

Far fewer people choose to trek Mt Meru compared to Mt Kilimanjaro, so it is not crowded at all. At the lower elevations, there is a good chance of encountering wildlife, so each group is accompanied by an armed park ranger.

Prices for a Mt Meru trek are:
4 Day Itinerary - From $1030/person
3 Day Itinerary - From $815/person
